Need Keyword Niche Finders?
Today I want to be right upfront and let you know that I’m “selling” something. (What a shock! LOL However, ‘actively’ selling something is a different animal than ‘passively’ selling something)
Here’s the deal, though… I’m hoping to weave in a little lesson about Marketing’s twin sister, Selling.
Marketing is about getting the word out… about YOU, about your PRODUCT, about your SERVICE, about how people can BENEFIT from hooking up with any or all of that. It’s about getting word out and BRANDING yourself.
Once you’ve done that effectively then you’ve got to send folks someplace… be it local or virtual, someplace to convert that awareness of you, your product, your service… into a sale. And that, my friend, requires selling! And in order to sell well, you need to hone the ability to speak and listen with an ear to the prospective customers needs and desires.
Whether it’s the words you speak when talking one on one with people or the words in the copy on your salespage, the important thing… if your goal is to make a sale… is to ferret out what they want, and what they NEED and WHY!
Oh certainly, product knowledge is good. Knowing how to qualify a prospect is good. Educating a customer is good. Giving a nice, solid presentation is good. And of couse, closing a sale is good. But I guarantee your number one question better be “What do you need and why do you need it?” if you are to ensure yourself of a sale with a happy customer likely to return and/or recommend you and your product.
You see, if you’ve done your marketing well, then you have already attracted a very likely customer who is interested in something you offer. Wouldn’t it be nice to know (and far more likely to leave you with a satisfied customer) what exactly they need so you can put your time and energy, as well as theirs, into making that decision easy for them?
The author of The Wizard of Ads, Roy H. Williams, talking before a group of stuffy English diamond dealers said, “people don’t buy diamonds for clarity, cut, color, or weight. They buy diamonds to see the reaction on their friends faces.”
The diamond dealers were aghast at such heresy. Convinced people were only interested in clarity, cut, color, and weight. Williams gave a dramatic pause. Then he deviously twisted the knife into the crusty old group a little deeper. “And that thinking, ladies and gentlemen, is why England sells fewer diamonds than any other country in the world.”
You would be very wise to heed this story. Think of it like this… whatever it is you sell, that is the diamond. Your number one priority is to discover the “reaction” your customers need to see.
